The Impact You’ll Make in this Role

  • Understanding and applying the operating principles, purpose, proper application, and design limitations of electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical circuits such as chillers, compressors, cooling towers, pumps, flow meters, fans, thermostats, humidistats, heat exchangers, and recorders.
  • Setting up, operating, and reading precision testing and measuring instruments to the instrument manufacturer's specification of accuracy. These instruments and devices include leak detectors, pressure gages, thermometers, psychrometers, velometers, and similar devices.
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosing equipment malfunctions. Making repairs or adjustments to existing components and possessing capability to identify replacement or substitute components.
  • Maintaining control logic program design and modifications to 3M building HVAC Unit controls.
  • Completing the required shop paperwork and using the reporting system following established procedures. This includes Daily Work Records, P.M. Route Sheets, Stock Withdrawal forms and other forms and records that may be required in the performance of the job or operation of the department.

This position requires driving a company vehicle, which will require pre-employment and ongoing review of motor vehicle history for candidates who are offered and hired for this position

Your Skills and Expertise

To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Associate degree or certification in two-year program in Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (completed and verified prior to start)
  • Minimum of two (2) years’ work experience in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Mechanic Craft area within the past seven (7) years
  • Universal Refrigeration Certification
  • Possess a current and valid Driver’s License

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

Training for this position will take place Monday through Friday, following an 8-hour day shift schedule, until the second quarter of 2026. After that, the schedule will transition to a 12-hour night shift on a 2-2-3-2 rotation, running from 5:45 PM to 6:00 AM.

Job Summary

In this role, you will be responsible for performing highly diversified duties to install, troubleshoot, repair and maintain production equipment according to safety, predictive, and productive maintenance systems and processes to support the achievement of the site’s business goals and objectives.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide emergency/unscheduled repairs of all manufacturing equipment during production as well as performing scheduled preventative maintenance of the same.
  • Perform mechanic skills including, but not limited to, mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, troubleshooting and repair of production machines.
  • Maintains and updates equipment documentation regarding repair/adjustments.
  • Be able to comprehend equipment manuals, electrical wiring diagrams, hydraulic drawings, and mechanical drawings.
  • Be able to provide required fabrication of various shields and guards. Ability to bend, cut, shape, weld.
  • Diagnose problems, replace or repair parts, test, and adjust.
  • Interface with manufacturing engineering to implement process improvements.
  • Use a variety of hand and power tools, electric meters and material handling equipment in the performance of your duties.
  • Be available to work various shifts, including overtime and weekends when necessary. To share call in duties with others assigned.
  • Actively participate and comply with all West Health, Safety and Environmental programs and regulations.
  • Maintain a neat and orderly work environment in accordance with West 5S program.
  • Participate in training to become more proficient in the working knowledge of and repair of incoming machinery.

Education

The Maintenance Mechanic performs routine and preventive maintenance on facility equipment and systems with limited supervision. Responsibilities include operating and maintaining the conveying system, troubleshooting electrical/mechanical issues, and performing repairs in accordance with SOPs, safety policies, and manufacturer specifications. The role also involves managing spare parts inventory, recommending tools and supplies to improve efficiency, and supporting process improvements. This position requires knowledge of building systems in a large office/distribution facility and includes participation in an on-call rotation, with flexibility for overtime and varied scheduling.

ESSENTIAL AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

• Carries out responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies, procedures, and state, federal and local laws.
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance and inspections on mechanical systems and equipment.
• Troubleshoot and repair mechanical issues on HVAC, plumbing, conveyors, motors and other systems.
• Maintain accurate documentation of maintenance activities and repairs.

Your experience and qualifications

Education/Certification/Experience:
• High School diploma or equivalent, and prefer hands-on or vocational school training, and a minimum of one (1) year of experience as a general maintenance mechanic in a warehouse environment, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Must possess a Valid Driver’s License.
• Familiar with OSHA requirements and safe practices.
• Mechanical aptitude and basic mathematics.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:
• Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and waste management policies by recognizing hazards and taking appropriate corrective actions.
• Analyzing and troubleshooting minor problems with equipment, identifying solutions, recommending and implementing methods, procedures and techniques for resolution.
• Performing preventative maintenance on all assigned equipment and operating systems. Performing repair techniques including cutting, drilling, gluing, caulking, fastening of plastic, wood and milled steel.
• Basic electrical and mechanical control and/or operating systems.
• Maintaining a clean and orderly work area.
• Demonstrate basic computer literacy, including the ability to operate a personal computer, navigate software applications, and utilize systems such as CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) for tracking maintenance activities and inventory.
• Read and interpret schematics, technical documents, and both written and verbal instructions to perform maintenance tasks accurately and safely.
• Communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Occasional:
• Incumbents in this class are subject to extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, pushing and pulling, stooping and crouching climbing and walking, vision to monitor, occasional lifting of equipment or materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
