About the role:

Forter is actively seeking a highly motivated and experienced Senior Accountant to become a key member of its Accounting team. This crucial role involves managing general accounting operations and providing essential support for the month-end and quarterly financial close processes. Core responsibilities include preparing journal entries and account reconciliations and ensuring compliance with accounting standards (GAAP). The Senior Accountant will be expected to collaborate cross-functionally across the organization, supporting both internal and external audits, meeting critical reporting requirements, and driving process improvement initiatives that enhance overall financial accuracy and efficiency.

This position will follow a hybrid model, 3 days a week in our NYC office.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Approve and review monthly payroll journal entries, including those for salaries, taxes, and other deductions for both U.S. and international entities.
  • Manage and reconcile key payroll-related accounts, such as accrued vacation, accrued bonus and accrued severance, ensuring they are accurately reflected in the general ledger.
  • Full ownership of the ASC 606 commission accounting, including capitalization, amortization, and impairment analysis of sales commissions, ensuring compliance and accurate expense recognition.
  • Collaborate with external auditors during the annual audit, providing necessary documentation and support related to payroll, commissions, and other key accounts.
  • Drive and participate in continuous improvement initiatives, identifying and implementing process efficiencies and automation through leveraging AI and technology.
  • Handle special projects and ad-hoc requests as needed.

What you’ll need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA is a plus.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a technology or SaaS company with both private and public company experience.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and financial reporting principles.
  • Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., NetSuite) and advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, etc.).
  • Proven ability to identify and implement process improvements.
  • High attention to detail with strong organizational skills
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Participate in weekly sales calls, and client presentations and business development meetings, when requested.
  • Provide timely and effective responses to client needs and compliance requirements.
  • Provide estimates for new accounting work and prepare all required documentation for new engagements.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal EY groups.
  • Facilitate communications and provide assistance to team members by sharing knowledge, offering advice, and making decisions to meet engagement deliverables.
  • Develop operational efficiencies to deliver timely high-quality services and work products.
  • Contribute to a flexible, stable and team oriented working culture that fosters staff development.
  • Complete self- study courses to maintain and enhance knowledge of fiduciary accounting and software applications, and to meet Firm continuing education requirements.
  • Work to ensure all projects are properly and timely billed and oversee follow-up with clients regarding bill collections.

Skills and Attributes for Success

To qualify for the role, you must have

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • CPA, EA, licensed Attorney, Professional Fiduciary orCTFA (Certified Trust and Fiduciary Advisor) certification
  • 5+ years of fiduciary/court accounting experience at a bank, law firm or CPA firm with a proven track record of successfully managing staff and engagements.
  • Excellent technical fiduciary accounting skills.
  • Experience working with complex assets (LLCs, partnerships, alternative investments, etc.) and large trusts and estates.
  • Experience working with family offices a plus.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experienced at reviewing IRS Forms 706, 1041 and K-1s.

Ideally, you will also have

  • Understanding of complex investments and fiduciary tax.
  • Understanding of trust structures and trust terminology.
  • Ability to review and interpret trust agreements and estate planning documents.
  • Strong management and leadership skills.
  • Strong client interaction skills.
  • Proficient with software applications, including OneSource Accounting Software FAS; Microsoft Word and Excel.

The base salary range for this job in all geographic locations in the US is $103,100 to $188,900. The base salary range for New York City Metro Area, Washington State and California (excluding Sacramento) is $123,800 to $214,900. Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography. In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options.
