Description:

What you'll do:

The required legal advice will range across cloud, software licensing and consulting contracts, and general legal topics. This role would particulary suit a commercial lawyer from within the Technology Services industry.

The successful candidate will:

  • Report to the Head of the UK Legal team and Deputy Regional General Counsel in EMEA.
  • Be part of the UK legal team and as part of the SAP Global Legal. You will work closely with the UK business and UK legal team.
  • Be primarily responsible for legal work to one of the UK sales divisions.
  • Act as the primary negotiator for complex commercial contracts with SAP customers and partners and provide trusted legal advice to SAP’s management.
  • Ensure that company business strategies are applied in recognition of legal implications and risks.
  • Ensure that all contracts are in compliance with SAP’s legal, contractual and business processes and policies.
  • Report legal disputes, legal aspects of customer escalations, and interact with outside counsel as necessary.
  • Contribute to the overall success of SAP’s business and be recognised as a business partner with an understanding of SAPs business objectives and cloud strategy.
  • Build strong stakeholder relationships and partner with account executives and sales managers and the wider SAP team such as Finance, Commercial and Revenue Recognition.
  • Work closely with the SAP’s Office of Ethics & Compliance, and ensure an appropriate level of internal governance is in place in relation to transactions and other business activities.
  • Understand and work according to the commercial pressures of a sales business in a high-pressure environment.

What you bring:

  • A qualified English lawyer with excellent working knowledge of Contract and IT Laws with 2-5 years post admission experience.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and drafting skills.
  • IT and IP legal experience.
  • Working knowledge of Data Privacy and Data Protection Laws such as GDPR.
  • Experience in negotiating commercial contracts with customers/partners.
  • Works well with the other UK lawyers who are expected to support and operate as a team.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment and cope well with pressure (including quarter end pressures).
  • Works independently and creatively (whilst keeping critical stakeholders informed), collaborates well with different parts of the global organisation and responds effectively to SAP’s sales and management teams.

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES

The primary responsibility of the China Regulatory Counsel is to help provide legal analysis on regulatory compliance topics and help drive compliance activities that support the application of the legal / regulatory requirements to the business. This role reports to the Head of the GRL and will work closely and in a collaborative fashion with colleagues in Security, Data Protection & Export Control, Government Relations, as well as Product Development, Cloud Operations, and Operating Lines of Business.

EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS

  • Directly support compliance activities in the interpretation and application of regulatory requirements.

  • Participate in the regulatory compliance activities under the CCSL Program supporting the appropriate integration of regulatory requirements into the compliance activities.

  • Engage with outside parties, including regulators, standard bodies, and peer organizations to understand and prioritize relevant regulatory topics.

  • Ensure that regulatory compliance processes are followed.

  • Help drive priorities and decision making with the compliance related workstreams.

  • Monitor & track compliance related risks as well as resulting remediation measures

  • Maintain an expert level knowledge on compliance topics

  • Work with related teams, especially Government Affairs, SGS, Corporate Legal, Data Privacy and Export Control, Field Legal, and Strategic Business Services, to integrate with existing and emerging compliance practices and tools.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ATTRIBUTES

  • Proven ability to interpret regulatory source materials and translate into requirements that are meaningful to the SAP business, in both English and Chinese.

  • Ability to integrate knowledge of non-Chinese regulations that may be relevant to application of Chinese regulations to SAP business

  • Ability to facilitate workshops and team activities

  • Structured problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to analyze and define technical and business requirements

  • Ability to grasp technical information technology concepts, for the Cloud, mobile, and on-premise, and translate them for legal, regulatory, and compliance subject matter experts

  • Ability work with and articulate legal concepts and business compliance requirements

  • Direct experience with regulatory compliance work

  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal and communication skills. Partners well with clients, maintaining frequent and open communication, to understand their business requirements and the impact regulations have or will have on the relevant product and/or service.

  • Has good project coordination skills. In particular, experience with product counseling, compliance projects and leadership in cross-functional teams is valued.

  • Ability to lead without formal authority across various organizations, regions/countries, cultures

  • Strong team player and networker, able to connect and integrate people with different skills and backgrounds

  • Internal stakeholder-focused and service orientated

WORK EXPERIENCE

  • 3-5 years working as an attorney or in-house counsel, with 1-3 years supporting matters related to regulatory compliance.

  • Experience in cloud businesses and/or information security is a plus.

EDUCATION

  • J.D. or equivalent law degree from an accredited university.

  • Further technical degrees or certifications (e.g., from IAPP) is a plus.
