Description:
Define best-in-class processes to meet all Apple design and operational requirements. Develop and document processes including all parameters, consumables and secondary operation requirements to meet defined specifications. Provide leadership at manufacturing sites during development and product production ramp, and drive engineering issues to resolution. Use data to drive process decisions, basic data analysis, DOEs, SPC, etc. Identify, research, develop, and qualify premier equipment manufacturers and suppliers. Define part tolerance and specifications by demonstrating process capability to Product Designers and Industrial Designers. Work with Global Supply Managers to define and establish supply chain requirements using selected equipment and manufacturing suppliers. Work with Manufacturing Quality Engineers to work on and close quality issues, drive yield improvement, and ship good parts to downstream supply chain nodes. Lead process development/have expertise in one of the process development areas listed below: CNC machining - Develop all CNC milling and turning processes. Scope appropriate CNC equipment to be used, develop CNC fixtures, implement touch probing, lead the reduction of cycle time, development of advanced cutters and coatings, High Speed Machining implementation, support the programming and optimization of all CNC-related activities. Own yield improvement actions and process change decisions based on SPC data analysis. Surface Finishing - Develop new processes in the area of chemical polish, chemical thinning, blasting, tumbling, mechanical polishing, wet sanding, lapping, anodizing, and PVD. Ensure that quality and yield requirements are met. Assembly - Develop all assembly processes. Includes incorporating welding, gluing/adhesives(OCA/LOCA), film lamination and mechanical fit based processes. Support qualification of equipment at suppliers, including detailed documentation of process parameters. Own yield improvement actions and process change decisions based on statistical process control (SPC) data analysis. Identify automation opportunities and justify automation projects based on automation line efficiency metrics. Glass Processing - Develop all processes for glass laser, grinding, lapping, polishing, chemical strengthening, decoration and functional coatings (with inks, and other thin film deposition techniques etc). Ensure that quality and yield requirements are met.
  • BS/MS/PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Physics, or equivalent.
  • Experience in leading process development in a high volume manufacturing environment.
  • Experience in the selection, set-up, and validation of manufacturing equipment.
  • Good English skills.
  • Able to take frequent travel.
  • Strong abilities and background in materials characterization with hands-on troubling (understanding of analytical tools such as SEM / TEM / EDX / FTIR / XPS etc.).
  • Ability to work independently with cross-functional teams and drive towards common goals.
  • Ability to present technical analysis of manufacturing capability to diverse cross-functional team.
  • A team player who is self-motivated, result oriented and detail driven.
  • Knowledge in deep learning (DL) or statistical machine learning (ML) is preferred.

In this high visibility role, you will investigate and develop solutions to overcome ambitious technical tasks that require non-standard manufacturing approaches.• Develop and implement coatings that achieve challenging cosmetic & functional requirements in our highly visible brittle substrates• Work with Apple’s Industrial Design and Product Design teams to create working specifications related to coating processes• Work directly with overseas manufacturers implementing solutions meeting high-volume commercial goals; collaborate with premier equipment and process manufacturing partners to create next-generation processes and test limits of process capabilities• Determine feasibility to achieve aggressive goals evaluating manufacturing processes at early stages of product development• Plan and complete studies to confirm process capability to achieve technical goals for high volume programs• Present analysis to key decision makers that will be used to make commercial and design commitments• Assess specific coating requirements and relate design goals to process, equipment, and material requirements that will be used to evaluate a set of options to solve difficult manufacturing problems.• Research manufacturing processes and evaluate them for their potential to achieve technical goals. Develop expert level understanding of key process drivers in order to determine how to best to leverage process capabilities. Apply that knowledge as the technical resource for other process teams to support implementation at supplier locations.• Plan and implement development trials to test feasibility, optimize process inputs, and validate capabilities of process options. Analyze results and provide recommendations based on sound engineering discernment as well as data.• Present analysis to key decision makers which will be used to make significant commercial and design commitments.• Project management experience and ability to program-manage across multiple projects, vendors and resources.
  • BS or equivalent experience in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering
  • 7+ years of experience in hands-on development of coating (ink, painting, PVD, CVD) and/or production environment
  • Experience in coating equipment hardware design
  • Advanced materials/process development experience
  • Periodic domestic and overseas travel expected (up to 30%)
  • Expertise relating material properties to design requirements, process drivers, and test methodologies
  • Ability to lead a development program to a schedule from research phase into manufacturing execution in a matrixed organization
  • Expertise using advanced analytical techniques to characterize chemical and mechanical properties or troubleshoot failure modes
  • Experience establishing and validating coating processes for mass production
  • Excellent analytical skills with an emphasis toward implementing solutions
  • Self-motivated with a dedication to delivering high quality results in a dynamic environment

Description:
As a Materials Engineer/Expert FTIR Spectroscopist, you will be responsible for conducting Failure Analysis on cross-functional projects involving different internal and external partners and ensuring that they are planned, well-executed and on-time.
  • Lead FTIR-based failure analysis and characterization of adhesives, films, plastics, and polymer systems, specifically for organic and multi-component formulations.
  • Conduct detailed characterizations of polymers, adhesives, and films, analyzing material properties, interactions, and potential degradation mechanisms to identify root causes of failure.
  • Develop and execute experimental plans that leverage FTIR spectroscopy to solve complex material challenges, ensuring thorough investigation and reliable results.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with other Material Scientists and engineers on the team to develop and execute multi-technique experimental plans to drive root cause.
  • Collaborate closely with company-wide engineers, technical teams, and requestors to ensure alignment on project goals and effective communication of findings.
  • Utilize a broad range of IR analysis techniques (ATR, transmission, micro-spectroscopy) and perform skilled and insightful interpretation of spectra with minimal reliance on automated libraries, and avoiding over-interpretation.
  • Engage with cross-functional team members and specialists as needed, recognizing when additional expertise is required to achieve the best outcomes.
  • Document and present results in reports that clearly communicate findings and insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative FTIR and other molecular, optical and/or polymer analysis methodologies and best practices within the team, continuously advancing our analytical capabilities.
  • 2+ years of industry experience in FTIR spectroscopy and failure analysis with PhD in Chemistry, Polymer Science, Materials Science, or a related field
  • Extensive experience in FTIR analysis of organic materials, polymers, adhesives, films, and plastics, especially in failure investigation and material degradation studies.
  • Strong expertise in polymer and adhesive science, with familiarity in consumer products and consumer electronics components and assemblies.
  • Proficient in all types of IR analysis techniques, capable of performing nuanced, tool-based spectral interpretation with careful attention to accuracy.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to convey complex technical findings in an accessible manner to diverse stakeholders.
  • Highly collaborative, with a natural curiosity and a creative, solution-driven approach to problem-solving.
  • Background in consumer electronics materials, with knowledge of typical failure modes in polymers, adhesives, and plastic components with 5+ years of industry experience.
