In this role, you will…

· Work both independently and collaboratively within a fast-paced environment

· Extract parameters from SQL database and conduct data cleansing and feature engineering

· Build, optimize, validate, and interpret machine learning models or business logic

· Use innovative techniques to create and expand labeled data for supervised learning

· Identify key insights from analytical results, prepare well-documented reports/presentations

· Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Invisalign products and database parameters

· Transform business requirements to executable technical action items

· Work efficiently in a fast-paced environment and meet critical deadlines

· Multi-task and prioritize requests to meet the most important and urgent business needs

In this role, you’ll need …

· Must be currently enrolled at an accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelor’s, MS, or PhD degree with at least one quarter/semester to complete after internship.

· Must be available to work full time during the summer months (May – August)

· This position is located in our San Jose office and requires in-person attendance at the office 5 days a week from May-August 2026. Relocation assistance is not provided.

· Relevant experience in data mining, statistical analysis, and machine learning modeling

· Proficiency with querying relational database (e.g. SQL)

· Experience with scripting languages such as Python or R

· Ability to learn quickly and absorb various techniques and knowledge

· Good communication skills to clarify business needs

· Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work in a team environment

· To be detailed oriented and well-organized with great time management skills

Align Technology, Inc. (the maker of Invisalign® aligners) is looking for a Research Scientist Intern. The Research Scientist Intern will be responsible for assisting the Emerging Technology team. He/she will work closely on individual research projects focusing on new electrochemical biosensor development while assisting ongoing research and development projects. The position is located at Align’s corporate headquarters in San Jose, California, and is for a full-time role starting in the summer 2026.

In this role, you will…
§ Assist research scientists in laboratory benchtop testing.
§ Perform laboratory benchtop test to evaluate product performance.
§ Analyze and perform statistical data analysis and interpretation.
Duties will also include general engineering support in R&D.

In this role, you’ll need …
To be a student currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s in Chemistry, Biophysics, Bioengineering, or related scientific disciplines.
Hands-on experience with laboratory benchtop testing.
Responsibilities may be quite diverse of a technical nature.
Excellent problem-solving skills, thoroughness, and attention to detail.
Strong interpersonal, oral, written, and visual communication skills, with the ability to present findings concisely and effectively.
Familiarity with software packages for data processing and analysis (e.g. MATLAB, Python, Minitab, Excel).

Role expectations
  • Apply advanced data analytics to derive insights from production data and clinical studies and contribute to product development projects
  • Work on full-stack data analysis: Defining problems, data collection through SQL queries, data cleaning & wrangling, exploratory & confirmatory analyses, data visualization and storytelling
  • Responsible for constructing technical hypotheses, performing statistical analyses, and interpreting analysis results to support data-driven decision making for product development
  • Identify key insights from analytical results, prepare well-documented reports/presentations and share with internal/external stakeholders
  • Work collaboratively and independently in the design, analysis, and interpretation of prospective and retrospective clinical studies
  • Participate in the review and update of bench-top testing best practice methodologies, including design of experiment, and statistical significance of results in support of product research team
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of the Invisalign products and operational procedures
  • Provide product/clinical analytics expertise within the R&D group, including product engineering, materials, software, and clinical research teams
  • Build effective working relationships with management and connect with diverse cross-functional teams both locally and globally

What we're looking for
  • MS or PhD in data analytics, statistics, biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, or related technical field
  • 3+ years of relevant industrial experience in data analytics and modeling. An appropriate combination of education, skills, and experience can be substituted for total years
  • Experience with querying relational databases (e.g. SQL)
  • Experience with scripting languages such as R or Python
  • Experience with machine learning techniques and algorithms
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complicated quantitative concepts to non-technical audiences and interact cross-functionally with both technical and non-technical people
Desired:
  • Dental, medical device or pharmaceutical industry experience preferred
