We are looking for a Senior Director, Strategic Energy Projects, to partner with our commercial energy teams andour peer teams throughout Cloud Operations + Innovation (CO+I) Team to help structure creative data center project and energy opportunities that will execute quickly and become replicable with strategic partners. This position will be responsible for identifying new opportunities, coordinating due diligence and site negotiations and vetting creative structures to help accelerate the deployment of our data center infrastructure more quickly and in new ways.

  • This role is located in - Atlanta, GA, Washington, D.C., Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX or Phoenix, AZ.
  • Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates will need torelocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location.
  • This role is eligible for hybrid or remote work, up to 50%.

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 10+ years’ experience in energy
    • OR Master's Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 8+ years’ experience in energy
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements is required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check. This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 15+ years’ experience in energy procurement
    • OR Master's Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 12+ years’ experience in energy procurement
    • OR equivalent experience.

Strategic Project Sourcing and Vetting

  • Determine viability and scalability of emerging technologies to support Microsoft’s data center portfolio expansion with near term energy opportunities. Partners closely with the multiple commercial teams to determine optimal strategies for the most complex and/or undefined project structures.
  • Partners with internal energy teams to develop multi-year sourcing strategies for multiple technologies of varying maturity levels that are optimized to ensure reasonable cost and sufficient continuity of supply while meeting performance metrics.
  • Leads a team working to ensure that our efforts are resilient to disruptions and that mitigation plans are in place that can address issues with seasonality, financial health, performance, and/or major unavoidable events (e.g., climate events, COVID-19). Provides guidance to team members on viability and risk management strategies across product categories and best practices, with a specific focus on risks around First-of-a-kind (FOAK) technologies
  • Leads a team to develop recommendations for investments in new technologies and/ or provide input on contract structures. Provides guidance to team members to influence the adoption of technologies across multiple categories based on needs of Microsoft products.

Management and Leadership

  • Leads and defines comprehensive, actionable strategies for optimizing the commercial transaction in close coordination with multiple internal stakeholders, and leads the vetting and analyzing new large-scale energy opportunities with a focus on cross-functionally, ensuring that that price, capacity, and strategic business needs are met, risks are identified and mitigated, and long-term cost reduction opportunities are realized. Where appropriate, ensures compliance with Microsoft's requirements for cross-functional engagements with suppliers. Makes and delivers to budget commitments.
  • Serves as Microsoft's central point of contact for strategic energy opportunities and analysis across various spaces, but especially in the analysis of onsite generation opportunities: Defines and executes on processes to enable and develop new suppliers, conducts business review discussions, and suggests and manages suppliers against market-relevant key performance indicators (KPIs) for evaluating financial health, performance, and compliance with Microsoft business requirements (e.g., security, social responsibility, payment terms).

Technical Engagement

  • Facilitates comprehensive technical engagements with cross-functional teams to determine viability of emerging technologies.

Program Management

  • Manages internal cross-functional partnerships, defines processes and governance for on-boarding and managing supplier partnerships, shares best practices and drives opportunities to improve upon processes, influences near- and long-term sourcing decisions by clearly articulating technical and business implications (e.g., structuring, pricing), seeks to align investments with short- and long-term supply needs, and serves as a point of escalation to resolve supply issues and ensure continuity of supply in alignment with product and/or service roadmaps.
