Director of Engineering – GenAI Platform

The Director of Engineering (Gen AI Platform) will play a pivotal role in driving strategic AI focused initiatives from conception through execution in Citi. This position requires a dynamic leader who can shape firsts in an organization, provide hands-on engineering leadership, and excel in uncertain and high-velocity environments.

The Application Engineering & Platform team that you will be joining owns the exciting mission of shaping the direction of travel for generative AI at Citi, defining the technology and engineering strategy and making it real for the bank. In this role, you will also be pivotal in designing the future of safe AI in the bank. You'll collaborate with key functions across the bank, including engineering, central infrastructure, legal and research teams, to deliver enterprise-wide AI solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Engineering AI centric platforms at scale:You will be engineering Citi’s Gen AI platform (including all core layers such as the API machinery, user interfaces, core logic for business flows, model tuning and rollout). Your remit will include taking the platform from concept to a secure, fully functional enterprise scale solution. Some core technologies we build with include Kubernetes, Terraform, Postgres, Kafka, Python, Golang, OpenAI and cloud platforms.
• Engineering Leadership:Offer hands-on leadership to our distributed engineering teams, encouraging technical excellence and promoting a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning. As a leader, you will provide mentorship and strategic direction to the team, ensuring projects align with organizational goals.
• Stakeholder Management:Act as the primary liaison for program stakeholders, adeptly managing relationships and expectations across a broad range of functional teams, leadership levels, and external partners.
• Generative AI solutions:Participate in the evaluation, execution and rollout of Generative AI solutions across the bank
• Team Development:Hire, mentor, and develop the careers of a team of engineers. Foster an environment that prioritizes people development alongside product development.
• Technology Strategy:Work in tandem with the engineering team(s) to formulate and execute technology strategy across the bank
• Strategic Program Execution:Oversee the development and execution of complex, cross[1]functional initiatives involving tens of teams working on diverse products for all of ICG. Ensure the alignment of program outcomes with strategic business objectives

What you will bring to this role

• Experience leading teams in solving modelling problems using AI/ML approaches
• Have experience-driven empathy for the tools, frustrations, and processes that slow engineering teams down and lead to toil or burnout.
• Extensive relevant experience in engineering & engineering leadership roles.
• Have experience supporting fast-paced startup-style engineering teams
• Proven record of managing and delivering large-scale, complex platforms in a high-growth environment.
• Extensive understanding of software engineering best practices, ideally with hands-on experience in a leadership role.
• Previous experience in leading teams, mentoring, conducting 1:1s, setting roadmaps, managing a hiring pipeline.
• Adept at handling uncertainty and ambiguity, with strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions based on incomplete information

Technical

• Experience with real world system building and data collection, including design, coding (Python, Go, TypeScript)
• Deep experience in working with ML tools and frameworks such as PyTorch, Tensorflow, Keras, etc
• Deep experience in containerisation technologies and the Kubernetes ecosystem
• Experience with cloud Platforms such as AWS or GCP
• Deep familiarity with the evolving AI landscape is crucial to this role, including understanding of language models, transformers, vector stores
• Experience with building OpenAI plugins, working with frameworks such as LangChain, creating agents will be a plus
