Environmental Planner, you’ll use your skills and experience to assist in regulatory compliance, permitting and environmental documentation at the Federal, state, and local levels primarily in Washington State but working on projects in other states is possible. You’ll support a variety of transportation, water, and utility projects. As an Environmental Planner with us, you’ll have the opportunity to play a role in all stages of the environmental review and compliance process, including performing alternatives analyses, researching and writing technical reports for NEPA and SEPA documents, preparing permit applications, and participating in public involvement processes. The Environmental Planner career path provides the opportunity to work on varying assignments that require high organization, attention to detail, excellent writing skills, practical experience, and working knowledge of NEPA, SEPA and other relevant environmental regulations. You will have opportunities to contribute, grow and learn while serving as a key member within the Ecosystems Restoration, Science and Planning department, consisting of highly-skilled environmental engineers, planners, landscape architects, arborists, architectural historians, archaeologists, biologists, and environmental compliance professionals. The position can be based out of Jacobs’ Bellevue, Yakima, or Spokane offices.

Here's what you'll need

- Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Regional Planning, Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, Geography, Biology, Ecology, Landscape Architecture or a related field.

- Minimum of 7 years of experience as a planner, scientist, or science-based technician; or similar position. A Master's degree may count as 1 year of experience; internships and related technical assignments may be considered for the required experience.

- Proven experience preparing NEPA for federal lead agencies such as FHWA, FTA, and FRA, and SEPA documentation.

- Desire to learn Federal, state and local permitting requirements and procedures.

- Strong technical writing and communication skills Ability to act as the environmental lead on projects, informing and directing technical discipline staff.

- Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate with clients.

- Understanding and experience preparing environmental documentation for Sound Transit, WSDOT, FHWA, Sound Transit, City of Seattle, Port of Seattle, King and other Washington Counties.

- Understanding of Clean Water Act, Washington State Hydraulic rules, Washington State Shoreline Management Act, Washington Growth Management Act, and local jurisdictional critical areas regulations and permitting.

- Experience and comfort handling public involvement, agency coordination, and interfacing with stakeholders and professionals.
