Your impact

As a key member of our leadership team, you’ll have the chance to get involved daily in a wide-variety of value-added responsibilities including, but not limited to, sales, operations, portfolio/people management, and project delivery for challenging and complex bridge, highway and roadway projects. You will be a Design Manager on traditional and Design-Build transportation projects throughout the Virginia and East-Central geography and will have the opportunity to assist with procurement strategies, provide transportation engineering expertise, negotiate hours, develop and maintain schedules and budgets, direct and mentor project staff, and ensure quality reviews are completed. You will serve as a Client Service Leader and manage external client relationships – specifically with local county and city governments – as well as lead and participate in business development and marketing initiatives as required. As you get integrated into the company, you will be exposed to operational portfolio management with the short-term goal to use your strong inspirational leadership skills to provide mentoring and career development for the project managers in your portfolio of projects and aligned PMs; this role includes coaching and improving skills in scoping and budgeting of projects, project execution, and overall client management and satisfaction, and overall developing an environment for the PM’s financial and professional success.

In this role, you’ll be responsible for the following:

• Build upon your understanding of alternative project delivery models including design-build, progressive design-build, public-private partnerships, etc. as you develop the skill sets to serve as a Design Manager for our industry-leading practice teams in Virginia and across the East-Central Geography

• Work with other local and regional Design-Build leaders to identify and track opportunities; lead or support building strategic win-win relationships with other consulting firms and Contractors as partners

• Accountable for integrating the delivery team during procurement and after Award and oversee design coordination, quality, and ensuring the technical solutions meet the scope

• Provide technical leadership and oversee all aspects of bridge and highway design projects, including design-build projects

• Engage with planning and design professionals through our internal technical and social communities to help grow your technical skill sets, engage with peers and mentors, and gain awareness of our global technology and project delivery platforms

• Serve as the point of contact for client service activities and develop strategies to grow the transportation practice for various county and city government clients in Northern Virginia

• Facilitate deep, personal, valuable client relationships between Jacobs’ personnel and client personnel (management, technical, functional, delivery) to weave a fabric of broad-based relationships between our firm and the clients

• Actively engage with project and Sales teams to influence pursuit team on sales process discipline, win strategy and proposal development, interviews and presentations

• Coordinate and facilitate the Sales process, including Go/No-Go decisions, and help develop required sales costs aligned with opportunity potential and return on investment objectives

• Participate in local industry events and community engagement opportunities that are in alignment with our clients’ goals and presence, thereby maximizing our brand recognition; partner with others to get local staff out into the community to build relationships and enhance our brand

• Mentoring and coaching of aligned project managers that you will supervise

• Review and approval of project risk register/mitigation plans, project execution plans, and project quality plans

• Conduct monthly Project Reviews (PR) on projects and document critical issues and actions

• Attend Project Administrative Reviews (PARs) as required to discuss projects within portfolio responsibilities to Senior Leadership

• Participation/Leadership of pricing reviews and strategy

• Review accuracy of ETCs/EACs, address variances or issues with PMs, and approve Revenue Recognition workflows

Here's what you'll need

• Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering

• Substantial years of progressive leadership experience in sales, operations, engineering design, design management, and project management

• Registration as a P.E. in the Commonwealth of Virginia, or the ability to attain within 6 months of employment

• Previous experience working on alternative delivery (Design-Build and PPP) major transportation projects as a Design Manager, Deputy Design Manager, or Task Lead

• Experience in stakeholder relationship development, management, procurement strategies, and proposal development

Ideally, You'll Also Have:

• An advanced degree in business (e.g., MBA) or demonstrated business management experience

• Strong technical design background in bridge engineering, traffic engineering, highway design, and highway drainage, as well as familiarity with AASHTO, FHWA and MUTCD standards

• High level existing contacts and strong relationships with VDOT and other State & Local government clients

• High level existing contract and strong relationships with local, regional, and/or national Contractors

• Experience managing projects with multiple clients

• Experience managing staff and providing career development through mentoring and coaching

• Actively engaged in professional organizations and other industry-specific organizations
