What You’ll Do
  • Conduct visual and functional inspections of actuators and associated parts to identify defects, irregularities, and areas for improvement
  • Install actuators on dynamometers, test, and analyze engineering prototypes to validate design assumptions and identify areas for improvement
  • Collaborate with test engineers to develop and execute test plans, procedures, and protocols to validate drive unit performance and reliability
  • Communicate effectively with cross-functional teams, including design, reliability, and Test Engineers, to identify and resolve technical issues and improve product design
  • Provide clear and concise documentation of test results, inspection findings, and technical issues to support data-driven decision making
  • Maintain a high standard of organization and safety in the lab, including inventory management, tooling, and equipment maintenance
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement changes to increase efficiency and productivity
  • Design, fabricate, and modify test fixtures and equipment to support actuator testing and validation
  • Stay up to date with industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies
  • You may travel to support lab expansion and testing activities at Bay Area and/or global Tesla facilities
What You’ll Bring
  • Extensive practical experience in a similar role, with a strong background in Engineering principles and practices
  • Proficient in mechanical fabrication, with experience in machine shop operations and expert-level skills with hand and power tools
  • Ability to disassemble and reassemble electromechanical systems without instruction, demonstrating strong mechanical aptitude
  • Familiarity with standard electronics lab tools, including AC/DC meters, data acquisition systems, and AC/DC power supplies
  • Experience with wiring harness design and fabrication, including soldering, crimping, and following wiring diagrams
  • Strong understanding of physics and engineering fundamentals, with the ability to apply principles to solve complex problems
  • Excellent documentation and written communication skills, with proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience with LabVIEW or Python or similar is a plus
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs., with frequent standing, walking, and bending in a fast-paced lab environment

  • Experience and knowledge of collecting data and reporting data in a data collection software such as MS Excel is a must
  • Excellent teamwork/interpersonal skills with a willingness to gain and share new knowledge and the ability to communicate effectively
  • Familiarity with environmental stress testing or automated test systems is a plus

What to Expect

We are looking for a Vehicle Technician who will be responsible for preparing prototype and production level vehicles for Chassis Controls testing. This full time role requires the flexibility of traveling (40%) to various domestic and international destinations in summer and winter conditions. You will enable the testing of safety critical Chassis Controls software (Traction Control, Stability Control, Steering, ABS, etc.).

  • 3+ years Vehicle Technician experience
  • Valid driver's license required

  • Perform detailed analysis and testing of hardware subassemblies, such as actuators, motors, sensors, power distribution units, and embedded control systems
  • Work from technical documentation (including schematics, CAD models, and specifications) to perform diagnostics and repairs
  • Collaborate with the design and development teams to identify potential design issues and suggest improvements to enhance hardware reliability and performance
  • Develop, refine, and implement procedures for hardware debugging, testing, and failure analysis
  • Work with the Material Review Board (MRB) to address hardware discrepancies and drive resolution for identified issues
  • Collaborate with the manufacturing and operations teams to ensure seamless hardware integration into the Optimus assembly process
  • Provide feedback on current and future design iterations to ensure hardware is scalable and meets long-term operational goals
What You’ll Bring
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience working with electromechanical hardware systems, robotics, or similar advanced engineering fields
  • Strong understanding of hardware failure analysis and troubleshooting, including mechanical, electrical, and sensor integration
  • Hands-on experience with robotic systems, including actuators, motors, and sensors, and familiarity with advanced control systems
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical CAD design, troubleshooting tools, and test equipment
  • Proficiency with electrical test equipment (oscilloscopes, multimeters, and signal generators) and mechanical measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, etc.)
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to quickly diagnose issues and provide effective solutions
  • Experience with automated manufacturing systems and high-volume hardware production processes is a plus
  • Proficient in using software tools such as CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.), and other relevant diagnostic and data collection tools

  • Exceptional analytical problem-solving skills, able to identify and surface issues within complex HW/SW systems
  • Proficiency with Python (read/write) and C (read)
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate cross-functionally, work hands-on, and execute on open-ended projects in a fast-paced, resource-constrained environment
