Job Description

As a Media Lubricant Development Engineer – Summer Internship, you will be part of the Media lubricant team responsible for development of next generation lubricants.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to advanced lubricant designs to support media tribology for next generation media and drive development, including HAMR.
  • Work with media process teams to optimize the media tribology design
  • Investigate interactions between lubricant and carbon surface under various stress conditions, and improve tribology performance, thermal performance, chemical and particle robustness of the interface
  • Work with lubricant vendors to develop and deliver new molecule structure and functional groups
  • Conduct experiments and develop new test methodologies to understand media tribology issues
  • Identify fundamental tribology failure mechanisms and propose effective modifications to improve robustness.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Ph.D. candidate in in chemistry, surface chemistry, material science, tribology or related field.
  • Requires experience and a strong background in analytical chemistry, surface chemistry, polymer chemistry, and tribology.
  • In-depth understanding of analytical techniques, design of experiments, and statistical process control
  • Great communication and presentation skills are a must
  • Ability to approach problem solving in an organized manner

Preferred:

  • Preferred knowledge and experiences: HPLC, Mass spectrometry, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM), and surface analysis techniques

  • The salary range is what we believe to be the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in California, Colorado, New York or remote jobs that can be performed in California, Colorado and New York. This range may be modified in the future.
  • If your position is non-exempt, you are eligible for overtime pay pursuant to company policy and applicable laws. You may also be eligible for shift differential pay, depending on the shift to which you are assigned.
  • You will be eligible to participate in Western Digital’s Short-Term Incentive (STI) Plan, which provides incentive awards based on Company and individual performance. Depending on your role and your performance, you may be eligible to participate in our annual Long-Term Incentive (LTI) program, which consists of restricted stock units (RSUs) or cash equivalents, pursuant to the terms of the LTI plan.
