As the Gateway Modem Systems Engineer, you will take the lead inside the RF Hardware team to define, design, and deliver modem system level engineering requirements. This will require cross-functional coordination with hardware, software, firmware, and CommSys teams to deliver solutions that can be realized for flight hardware. In this role you will:
• Coordinate with ASIC, antenna, comm systems, & software teams to help define and drive a state of the art road map for high throughput satellite communication links
• Own Modem requirements and work with communication systems team find impact of non-compliant requirements.
• Develop modem architectures & work through design trades between LRUs as needed
• Coordinate closely with spacecraft & ground systems integration teams to specify, verify, & validate LRU and system level specifications.
• Debug & resolve inter-system interactions encompassing diverse problem domains including software, power distribution, & manufacturing.Export Control Requirement:
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, or related discipline, or 7+ years of relevant experience
- Experience in hardware/PHY design of modem boards, ASICs, SiP, or SOICs
- Experience with FPGA or ASIC-based software defined radios
- Solid understanding of digital communication systems theory including: modulation types, FEC, spectral efficiency, bit error rate, SNR, link budgets, and spread spectrum
- Solid understanding of communication system components such as modems, ADC/DACs, frequency converters, filters, LNAs, SSPAs, and antennas
- Experience with high speed digital serial bus such as SERDES, JESD204.x, Interlaken, etc
- Familiarity with PHY layer and MAC layer embedded software
- Direct design experience with RF/Microwave hardware
- Understanding of radio technologies and how they operate inside of a digital communications system.
- Understanding of terminology & fundamentals of diverse disciplines such as software, firmware, and traditional EE designs.
- Understand clocking requirements, including phase noise, synchronization, and jitter.
- Experienced with common RF test equipment in the lab.
- experience with space hardware and space qualification
- Experience with Linux embedded software/firmware and Python
- Understand RF hardware and related impairments that affect link performance and how to address them.
- Experience with non-linear components and time-varying and fading communication channels.
- Experience working in a cross-functional team that includes disciplines such as mechanical engineering, thermal, reliability, software, and program management.
