Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Performs traffic incident and congestion monitoring via available ITS devices including but not limited to various types of cameras, travel time readers, central traffic signal system, etc. Reports major traffic congestion to designated TES staff. Communicates with Public Safety agencies to report incidents. Reports debris, spills, etc., to designated Public Works staff. Follows practices, policies, and procedures as applicable.

• Operates a complex computerized traffic management system and other ITS devices. Advise other TES staff of any signal timing related issues or operational malfunctions.

• Supports the study and analysis of major operational traffic issues and recommendations for innovative solutions. Utilizes data in operations tasks and understands the different types of available traffic data collected.

• Assists in the operation of the City’s adaptive traffic signal system, including supporting the development and implementation of timing plans for individual signals and signal coordination plans for corridors.

• Assists the City Traffic Engineer in operating and maintaining the central traffic signal system and troubleshooting malfunctions. Utilizes hardware or software tools for basic network troubleshooting, including working on different types of traffic system communication media and hardware. Complies with City standards and policies for cybersecurity and communications.

• Maintains electronic documentation of pertinent TMC activities such as incident management activities, special events, parameter value changes, performance metrics, and TMC maintenance activities as directed.

• Processes traffic signal timing information requests as needed.

• Receives and responds to traffic and transportation concerns and issues; determines and recommends appropriate resolutions to maintain positive community/customer relations.

• Follows safety procedures, reports unsafe activities and conditions, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals.

• Effectively communicates with management, employees, other departments, the public and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems; respond to requests for service or assistance.

• Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable policies, procedures, codes, and regulations.

• Participates in the development of goals and objectives for the division as well as policies and procedures; makes recommendations for improvements to existing standards.

• Performs general/preventive maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles and assigned equipment in operable condition.

• Performs other similar duties as assigned.

**Due to the nature of traffic commuting patterns and variables such as special events, holidays, and construction schedules, work hours for this position will be non-standard, i.e., split shifts, early or late shifts.

Here's what you'll need

• Associate’s degree in civil engineering, transportation, or closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience demonstrating required knowledge, skills and abilities

• One (1) year’s experience in engineering, ITS, TMC, TOC, traffic signal operations, and/or information technology

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Strong interpersonal relationship skills with the ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other employees, government officials, contractors, suppliers, and the general public

• Must possess and maintain a current driver’s license with no major infractions

• Must be capable of personally driving a company vehicle in the performance of the duties contained herein

Ideally, You'll Also Have:

• Three (3) years of experience in municipal traffic engineering, including TMC operations and adaptive traffic signal control systems, traffic signal operations, or information technology

• Certification through IMSA as a Fiber Optics Technician and/or Transportation Center System Specialist Level I or II and/or certification through Cisco as a networking professional

**Due to the nature of traffic commuting patterns and variables such as special events, holidays, and construction schedules, work hours for this position will be non-standard, i.e., split shifts, early or late shifts.

The employee will perform most duties in a combination of outside work and an office environment. The position requires the employee to perform duties at a job site; at times working alone and at times working very closely with others. The employee may be subject to all types of weather and temperature conditions and various types of surfaces, including slippery or uneven surfaces.

Employee must be able to move or carry objects or materials and must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and up to twenty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for active work.
