Developing construction plans for transportation projects according to established local, state, and federal engineering standards and regulations. Designing safety and operational improvements to existing transportation systems. Developing cost estimates and specifications for transportation infrastructure improvements. Analyzing traffic capacity and developing signal timing plans. Drafting signage and pavement marking plans. Designing roadway improvements. Performing traffic capacity analysis.Composing traffic operations reports. Performing local / regional field observations to observe traffic and collect data.

REQUIREMENTS: This position requires a Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Civil Engineering, or closely related field, and 2 years of work experience in Transportation Engineering, Civil Engineering, or closely related occupation.
SPECIFIC SKILLS:
Expertise/ knowledge of: Engineer in Training (EIT) license. Transportation engineering geometric design principles; Traffic engineering; Transportation system operations; Ability to read and understand transportation engineering standards and guidelines, for example Illinois Department of Transportation Local Roads and Streets Manual, Chicago. Department of Transportation Complete Streets Design Guide. CAD software – Microstation or AutoCAD. Traffic analysis software – Synchro. National and State regulations relating to transportation, for example Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets (AASHTO Green Book), Manual on Uniform Traffic Control. Devices (MUTCD), Transportation Research Board Highway Capacity Manual (HCM). Strong communication skills; documented experience presenting/ reporting technical engineering information to non-engineers.
