About the role:

Manager of the analytical chemistry function within the Boston Scientific Preclinical Sciences Materials and Chemistry Laboratory Department. Has managerial, leadership, and staff development responsibilities and connects the lab function and lab customers on service provision and technical matters.



Your responsibilities will include:

  • Promote and monitor a safety-first culture in the laboratory and with hazardous materials.
  • Assists in and/or manages functional deliverables and ensures technical excellence for development of analytical chemistry methods, assays of content, purity, and stability of medical device drug coatings, and investigative chemical analysis of product components and raw materials. Supports new product development teams, commercial product sustaining, and supplier engineering/quality teams.
  • Leads function-specific test equipment sustaining and replacement projects. Provides guidance and approval regarding technical strategies and approaches for execution of analytical services to lab customers.
  • Provides guidance and training to staff, assists subordinates in driving toward career goals, motivates individuals to achieve high performance and valued deliverables, and recruits and maintains a high-quality staff.
  • Assists in and/or completes the development of budgets, monitors spending, and identifying and developing department function equipment, software, supplies, and tools.
  • Assists in and/or determines appropriate staff levels, schedules and resources. Works with lab customers and project leaders to understand priorities and plans resource and time allocation accordingly.
  • Collaboratively determines project staff assignments and schedules work to meet completion dates and deliverables.
  • Maintains and enhances cross-functional team relationships within the department and with lab customer groups and service partners.
  • Works cross-functionally in identifying, resolving technical issues, and monitors & evaluates project and department progress and results.
  • Reviews records and deliverables from the team for technical competency and compliance with department and company policies and procedures.
  • Executes or delegates and guides non-conformance investigations and reporting.
  • In all actions, demonstrates a primary commitment to patient safety and product quality by maintaining compliance to the Quality Policy and all other documented quality processes and procedures.
  • Assures that appropriate resources (personnel, tools, etc.) are maintained in order to assure Quality System compliance and adherence to the department and BSC Quality Policy.
  • Establishes and promotes a work environment that supports the Quality Policy and Quality System.

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Pharmaceutical Sciences with work experience emphasis in analytical chemistry related to pharma/compo device development.
  • 5+ years of work experience in industry as an individual contributor performing analytical chemistry tasks, especially with chromatography and mass spectrometry. The tasks involve non-standard investigational analysis as well as protocol and test method driven experimentation.
  • 3+ years of work experience in industry as a chemistry-based project team leader or functional analytical lab service team leader with scientific professional and technician direct reports
  • Work experience in goal setting and in providing on-going coaching and performance feedback to direct reports

Preferred qualifications:

  • Proven experience as an individual contributor in an analytical or bioanalytical pharmaceutical science role.
  • Experience serving as a project leader or functional team leader in a materials science and chemistry analytical laboratory.
  • Hands-on experience performing or leading a team in analytical chemistry method development and validation within a pharmaceutical or medical device company.
  • Proficiency in performing sample preparation and operating chromatography instruments/software, including chemical extraction via wet chemistry or dissolution apparatus, HPLC, LCMS, and GCMS.
  • Experience conducting scientific peer reviews and manager reviews of test records and reports to ensure technical competency and quality compliance.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience with analytical chemistry lab equipment, including both hardware and software.
