What you'll Do
You will work closely with the EMEA & APAC Tax team and other members of the tax and finance departments to lead tax advocacy, planning, advisory, litigation, tax technology and compliance review functions in the INSA region, with a primary focus on indirect taxes.
You would be expected to identify and research various tax risks and clearly articulate your findings to management through verbal / written communication (i.e. memorandums, PowerPoint, etc.) and help manage tax procedures and controls. Additionally, you are expected to uphold a strong working partnership with internal departments and external tax advisors and tax authorities.
Responsibilities
- Be a key player in managing Uber’s indirect tax affairs in the India South Asia region, including leading tax litigation, dispute resolution strategies, tax advocacy and interaction with tax authorities.
- Be the in-house tax advisor on business transactions, especially those related to marketplace services.
- Be part of a cross-functional team that works on rolling out new markets, products and services in the region.
- Work on M&A transactions, including preparation / review of tax due diligence reports, SPA, tax indemnity documents and lead any post-deal action steps.
- Work with external advisors and Uber’s global tax team to develop strategies for GST/VAT and other indirect taxes.
- Keep up-to-date with current and future tax laws, regulations, and court decisions, ensuring the company remains compliant.
- Help manage relationships with outside tax consultants, tax and regulatory authorities.
- Work in a smart, innovative way to drive improvements to processes, controls and reporting across the region and across operations.
- Collaborate with compliance & reporting and technology teams to ensure tax data is accurately recorded for audits and litigation.
- Think strategically while overseeing day-to-day tax operations, identifying risks, and helping resolve tax disputes.
- Prepare presentations and communicate complex tax matters in a clear and simple way to non-tax professionals.
- Lead interaction and knowledge sharing of indirect tax matters with our HQ in San Francisco as well as the EMEA, APAC and LATAM mega regions.
What You'll Need
- Finance, accounting and law degree.
- 14+ years of strong indirect tax experience in the INSA region in industry, law firms, and/or Big 4 firms.
- Combination of external and in-house experience would be plus, with technology based/e-commerce sector experience strongly preferred.
- Excellent project management and stakeholder management skills. Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts clearly.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work both independently and as part of a larger team.
- Solid understanding of international indirect tax concepts, particularly as it relates to cross border services, marketplace/merchant relationships, and product roll-outs.
- Solid experience in the management of indirect tax processes and controls with a comprehensive understanding of the overall tax environment in each country.
- SOX compliance experience preferred.
- Tax litigation experience is strongly preferred, especially in the INSA markets.
- Exposure to and experience with a broad range of APAC tax regimes would be viewed favourably.
- Self motivated, detail oriented, problem-solving, strong organisation, analytical, and strong interpersonal skills, a team player.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, rapidly changing, and high-growth organisation, and in developing and sustaining relationships with internal and cross-functional stakeholders.
