What to Expect

As an Engineer in the Seat Engineering Department, you will be responsible for Design Engineering from concept to End of Life as well as problem solving of existing products within the seating realm.

Typical commodities include seating structures, mechanisms, actuators, foam, trim, plastics, harnesses, controllers, PCBs, sensors. A seat can be defined as a product which enables comfortable support for vehicle occupants. In some sense it can be viewed as a moving robotic structural art piece.

In this role, you will partake in a wide range of engineering aspects: including Materials [Steel, polymers composites, fabrics, etc.] manufacturing equipment, PCB design, firmware/software, production processes, general mechanical design, supply chain enablement, Quality improvement and so on. You will learn a lot.

What You’ll Do
  • All phases of the product lifecycle: from concept to production. Concept generation, concept selection, packaging and layout within vehicle, detailed design, validation, manufacturing feasibility, production process, sustainability
  • Manage and negotiate product attributes for Safety, Functionality, Comfort, Craftsmanship, Cost, Mass, Schedule, Sustainability (to name a few)
  • 3D CAD generation e.g. in CATIA as well as 2D drawing making. Datum & fixation strategy, GD&T. Bill of Materials Making and owning
  • Use and Interpret CAE simulation results and integrate into product design. Utilize design tools such as DRBFM / DFMEA to enable robust products against their requirements
  • Participate and manage collaborative efforts with other departments within the Tesla Vehicle Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Procurement groups to ensure system integration and compatibility. Cross-functional technical communication with Commercial, Quality, and Supplier interfaces
  • Responsible for technical documentation creation for official use and communication
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or Mechatronics, or equivalent experience
  • 2 years of experience, with 1 year experience with a full design project
  • Solid fundamentals of mechanical engineering: statics, kinematics, dynamics, materials, mechanism, GD&T
  • Experience with Mechatonics: circuit design, PCB design, I/O and controls, embedded programming, Arduino
  • Experience with Biomechanis: Human muscle-skeletal anatomy, circulation, ergonomic and pathology
  • Experience with soft goods: designing with textiles, artificial leather, elastomers, fibers, cellular structures, flexures
  • Experience with Composite structures: designing with fiber-resin composites, manufacturing, testing
  • Proficiency in all channels of technical communication: 3D modeling, 2D drawing, hand sketching, hands-on prototyping, data collection and presentation
  • Evidence of Exceptional Ability. Organized. Self-motivted. Able to manage progression through tight timlines. Navigate technical challenges with first-principles
