As a health physicist you will have the opportunity to tap into your curiosity and collaborate with some of the most innovative and diverse people around the world. Here, you will make an impact by:

  • Supporting the global use of ionizing and nonionizing radiation in manufacturing and lab environments through integrating fundamental radiation safety principles into the development and implementation of radiation safety programs, procedures, and training
  • Ensuring safety and compliance through licensing, hazard assessment, controls, and audits
  • Improving radiation safety and compliance culture through modeling appropriate behaviors, coaching, and mentoring
  • Collaborating with radiation source users, principal investigators, and EHS professionals as part of the corporate global radiation protection team


To set you up for success in this role from day one, 3M requires (at a minimum) the following qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in health physics, medical physics or nuclear engineering with courses in college level algebra and all the core radiation safety areas: radiation physics, radiation biology, dosimetry, and radiation detection and measurement (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution
  • Health physicist professional-level experience in a private, public, government or military environment
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

  • Three (3) years of operational radiation safety experience developing, implementing, or auditing radiation safety programs, maintaining radioactive material licenses or radiation machine registrations, performing radiation surveys, developing radiation safety procedures, providing radiation safety consultation to radiation source users, and developing and delivering radiation safety training in a private, public, government or military environment
  • Master’s degree in health physics
  • Certification from American Board of Health Physics
  • Course work or experience in nonionizing radiation safety
  • Skills include
    • Effective communications with operations and/or research personnel, EHS professionals, and regulators
    • Knowledge of radiation control regulations
    • Application of radiation control techniques
    • Adherence to safety practices at industrial and research facilities

Work location:

  • Hybrid Eligible (Job Duties allow for some remote work but require travel to Maplewood at least 3 days per week)
