You will set the strategic direction and organizational vision for how Airbnb identifies, acquires, and retains the right supply to power our marketplace growth. Your team’s work directly influences where and how we invest in supply acquisition, which hosts receive targeted outreach and personalized guidance to succeed on our platform, and how we balance supply and demand across our global marketplace. You will drive large cross-team initiatives that are key drivers of growth for Airbnb, establishing the technical and organizational foundation that enables balancing the quality and incrementality of listings while helping millions of hosts maximize their success. You will build and scale a world-class organization of data scientists, applied scientists, and economists who develop cutting-edge causal inference models, targeting systems, and forecasting capabilities.
A Typical Day:
- Set organizational vision and strategy for marketplace intelligence, cascading goals across your team and aligning roadmaps to further long-term strategic objectives for Airbnb’s marketplace growth.
- Build and scale automated systems for supply acquisition, host targeting, and incentive optimization that operate at marketplace scale, powering customer-facing experiences such as personalized host insights, pricing guidance, and targeted outreach campaigns.
- Partner with engineering teams to operationalize sophisticated causal inference models into production systems that support internal decision-making and enable scaled host lifecycle programs, while maintaining high technical quality standards.
- Attract, retain, and develop senior individual contributors and technical leaders, building succession plans to close current and anticipated organizational gaps.
- Present complex analytical findings and strategic recommendations to executive leadership, influencing cross-functionally at the company level and contributing to papers and technical forums in the marketplace intelligence space.
Your Expertise:
- Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Economics, Statistics, Computer Science, or related quantitative field with 12+ years of relevant industry experience (9+ years with PhD).
- 4+ years of people management experience leading high-performing teams of data scientists, applied scientists, economists, or applied researchers, with demonstrated ability to attract, retain, and grow senior individual contributors.
- Deep expertise in causal inference methodologies (advanced experimentation and causal machine learning) and their application to marketplace dynamics and business problems.
- Strong background in machine learning and statistical modeling, with hands-on experience building uplift and valuation systems as well as forecasting models at scale.
- Experience in marketplace, platform, or multi-sided business environments with demonstrated understanding of supply-demand dynamics, network effects, and two-sided marketplace challenges.
- Proven track record of setting organizational vision and strategy, translating complex modeling insights into business strategy, and driving cross-functional initiatives that deliver measurable impact across large organizations with 1+ year strategic thinking horizon.
- Experience managing teams through long-term, high-ambiguity projects with ability to persevere through uncertainty and make strategic pivots when necessary.
- Exceptional communication and leadership skills with the ability to influence across Data Science and cross-functionally at the company level.
