What to Expect

International Students: If your work authorization is through CPT, please consult your school on your ability to work 40 hours per week before applying. You must be able to work 40 hours per week on-site. Many students will be limited to part-time during the academic year.

As an Engineering Program Manager Intern, you will be responsible for supporting a wide variety of cross-functional programs across the entire engineering organization: vehicle, hardware, and firmware. You will be tasked with supporting and in some cases leading the projects through all stages of development, coordinating between multiple teams across engineering, supply chain, vehicle programs, manufacturing, and operations leadership. You will organize and lead cross-functional engineering reviews for both complete vehicle programs and individual projects. In this role, you will have the chance to participate in the design and development of some of the most advanced vehicle technology projects in the world, with unparalleled agility.

What You’ll Do
  • Manage cross-functional programs from end-to-end, covering a range of areas across vehicle engineering; coordinating with vehicle, hardware and firmware teams. Scope of projects range from complete new product programs to very specific advanced technology development projects
  • Lead multiple advanced technology development projects to inform future vehicle design; coordinate engineering teams for technical deep-dives and global supply managers for cost analysis
  • Demonstrate critical thinking by making data driven decisions that advance the critical pieces of technology to Tesla’s mission
  • Develop and manage project plans and ensure on-time delivery with aggressive timelines
  • Define and drive the schedule for upcoming new project launches, new technology development milestones and sustaining programs
  • Constantly work to evolve our processes and systems towards increasing precision and dependability, while still maintaining the agility that has gotten Tesla to where we are now
  • Master documentation to track ongoing status of projects and issues ensuring that they are completed in a timely manner
What You’ll Bring
  • Currently pursuing a Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related field of study with a graduation date between 2025 - 2026
  • Must be able to relocate and work on site in Fremont, CA
  • Experience in fast paced environment with exposure to end-to-end product deployment — from concept through development and successful launch
  • Strong usage of project management tools such as JIRA, confluence, MS tool suite, Tableau
  • Full-stack web development skills in Django, React, and Python preferred
  • Experience with mechatronics/robotics/vision systems preferred
  • Excellent organization and delegation skills with ability to own the product roadmap and schedule with a track record of delivering projects on-time
  • Experience within manufacturing and supply chain is a plus

  • Take over and own design changes from new product development engineers during production launch and sustaining phases
  • Lead and support of manufacturing, quality, and field reliability issues
  • Own product improvements (cost, complexity reductions) and refinement of product specifications
  • Fully understand Tesla factory and supplier processes and manufacturing methods equipment
  • Lead root cause and corrective analysis of production and field issues
  • Collaborate with Field Quality & Reliability to drive warranty improvements
  • Creation and presentation of business case summaries for new or modified designs
  • Creation of detailed RFQ documents and CAD data packages (2D/3D) for sourcing of suppliers for new or modified parts and assemblies
  • Technical project management of supplier/development partner(s)
What You’ll Bring
  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Experience with owning mechanical designs and completing projects from design concept until production
  • Experience and desire to work within a manufacturing environment
  • Skilled with managing multiple projects at the same time
  • Experience with technical project management of suppliers (both internal and external) to support overall program milestones and prototype/ production build events

  • Lead electrical design for the following electrical deliverables: Single line diagram, panel schedule, grounding drawing, underground conduit drawing, power plan, lighting layout, and area classification drawing
  • Responsible to prepare electrical deliverables with respect to code compliance and ensure every design maintains the highest level of quality
  • Simulate and analyze electrical engineering studies (short circuit study, load flow analysis, arc flash study)
  • Participate in field construction and commissioning activities by serving as the point of contact for technical questions and real-time issue resolution
  • Interface with external EPC firms during bid and project execution phases as needed to ensure that design and specifications meet our Engineering Standards
  • Support site operations as an electrical system owner - ensure infrastructure reliability and design/coordinate changes as needed
What You’ll Bring
  • 2+ years working experience in the electrical infrastructure design. Electrical construction experience is plus
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years work experience in heavy commercial and industrial sector (manufacturing, datacenter, hospital, campus, etc)
  • Experience with Revit
  • Strong desire to be a part of a world class team focused on achieving amazing results
  • Proficient to NEC/CEC requirement/exceptions
  • Registered as a CA Professional Engineer (PE) or willing to work to attain your PE

What to Expect

As a Mechanical Design Engineer of the Exterior Engineering Team, you will be responsible to design, prototype, validate, release, and launch components for current and future vehicle programs.

You will be part of the team working on complex exterior vehicle systems in terms of styling, function, and quality. You will utilize your expertise in one or more of these commodities and develop as a vehicle engineer, designing and delivering components and exterior systems.

You will collaborate and work cross functionally with many other Vehicle Engineering teams to develop parts and assemblies from the concept phase to launching.

What You’ll Do
  • Concept engineering and feasibility
  • Packaging and layout within vehicle architecture
  • Design to deliver customer-driven exterior system targets for craftsmanship, function, cost, and weight
  • Participate in the iterative process with the Tesla design/styling studio to deliver the optimal balance of form vs. function vs. cost
  • Detail design including surface development, structures, datum strategy, attachments, GD&T
  • Utilize DFSS methodologies as appropriate during the design, validation and launch of the program
  • Interpret CAE simulation results and integrate recommendations into product design
  • Collaborate with key suppliers for DFM, MoldFlow and tooling design approvals supporting injection trials for part appearance and functional validation
  • Work with plastics engineering to improve designs for optimum layout of plastic assembling and paint lines
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams within the Tesla Vehicle Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering and Procurement groups to ensure system manufacturing, assembly feasibility and serviceability
What You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience
  • Catia V5/V6 experience is preferred. Experience and proven expertise using other CAD software are acceptable
  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering fundamentals
  • Basic knowledge of large plastic part design, plastic painting, injection molding and processing
  • Evidence of following the design process from initial concept stages through tooling release and production launch
  • Experience managing suppliers for product development
  • Exposure to a mix of design challenges for variety of materials and processes such as stamping, injection molding, casting, composites
  • Understanding the fundamental differences in design and engineering between low and high-volume production, as well as entry and premium vehicle requirements
  • Experience with DFSS methodologies during the design, validation and launch of automotive programs
  • Familiarity with the development of specifications, DFMEAs, DVP&R’s and other technical documents
