Job DescriptionIn this role, you will have the opportunity tolead the Global Design team and drive strategic projects for Patient Monitoring and Defibrillators within the Emergency Care business. As a key member of the Global Emergency Care R&D Leadership Team, you will report directly to the Head of Global R&D, Emergency Care. This role entails:
- Global Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of approximately 15 design professionals across China, USA, UK, and India.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with R&D, Product Management, and Clinical teams to ensure best-in-class usability and innovation.
- New Product Introductions (NPIs) & Sustainability: Lead Design solutions for NPI development and lifecycle management, ensuring alignment with market needs and sustainability goals.
- Regulatory Compliance: Oversee FDA submissions and approvals for NPIs, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
- User-Centered Design & Risk Management: Lead User FMEA initiatives to optimize product safety and usability.

- Analysis/research: You are driving the generation of people, business and market insights for the program, aligning project scope with overall program objectives.
- Creation/validation: You are leading the creative output of a multi-disciplinary or cross business team, orchestrating solutions and experiences across touchpoints and working with the Design Leader to define the creative vision for a project, program or domain.
- Process/delivery: You are driving operational excellence and efficiency of the team in context of the E2E process, taking responsibility for the design quality of the delivery, reporting output to the Design Leader in the business.
- Stakeholder focus: You are focusing on the customer, inspiring change towards internal and external stakeholders, with clear and impactful communication and articulation of experience strategy and design direction.
- Team: You are fostering effective teamwork to deliver on business and quality objectives, giving guidance to team members, being respectful and inclusive, driving performance, quality and integrity.
Key responsibilities
As a Design Director, you will:
- Responsible for leading and developing a global Design team across the globe for the Emergency Care business. Develop a strong local and global design team by fostering a culture of high performance, exceptional design quality, and professional growth by having direct and in-direct reports.
- Optimize design system value: Develop strategies to increase the design system’s impact on product teams by reducing complexity, eliminating unnecessary variants, and promoting consistent and scalable design practices.
- Build relationships across the organization: Collaborate with local product teams and stakeholders to drive adoption of the Philips Design System while aligning with the broader enterprise and program strategy.
- Partner with customers, product managers, developers, and other stakeholders to ensure design solutions align with business goals and customer needs.
- Ensure consistent, design quality execution of UI/UX across consumer and professional software products, leading by example with hands-on guidance and feedback to designers and front-end developers to elevate their craft.
- Advocate for the end-user experience, maintaining a firm customer-first mindset in all decisions.
You're the right fit if:
You are a seasoned Design Leader with:
- Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree from an accredited school in engineering / technical discipline and ideally a postgraduate degree (Masters or Ph.D.) in Electrical /Electronics/Mechanical/Human Factors Engineering/ HCI/Cognitive science/ Product/Interaction or other relevant academic background
- 15+ years in product design and development with 5+ years’ experience in leading a multi-disciplinary team developing medical devices.
- Proven expertise in UI/UX design: Demonstrated success in designing consumer and professional software, improving design processes, and driving large-scale design initiatives.
- Design system knowledge: Experience creating and managing scalable design systems, including strategies for adoption and migration in complex business settings.
- Knowledge and understanding of regulation requirements for usability of medical devices: FDA guidance and IEC62366-1 and experience in the healthcare domain and experience in clinical workflows e.g. in hospitals, pre-hospital. Experience in FDA 510k and EUMDR submission is a plus
- Business acumen: A clear understanding of how design impacts business objectives, with a focus on driving measurable results.
- Stakeholder management: Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, especially in matrixed organizations, to engage with product managers, developers, and other stakeholders effectively.
