As an EM within our Transportation business, you will undertake a key role in developing and delivering our client requirements. For this specific role the candidate will provide engineering assurance to the NR team responsible for setting up the development portfolio for TRU. The role is for an individual who can demonstrate they have the competence to undertake the role of a Network Rail (NR) Designated Project Engineer (DPE) and or Departmental Engineering Management (DEM) as specified in NR standard NR/L2/INI/02009. The role is expected to be required for circa 2 years. The location is preferably in Manchester 2-3 days per week or York, with an expectation of traveling between Design house offices and TRU offices. They must be in a TRU office 3 days a week.

Key Responsibilities:

The TRU development team require a full-time engineering lead with capability and experience to:

  • Fulfil the role of DPE across the TRU ES1-3 development portfolio. The Individual would be expected to work across the whole development portfolio. This comprises currently of multi-discipline Infrastructure schemes; predominately driven by the Fright portfolio and business case. Projects include 4 tracking loops (including TWAO) AFC circa £ 150m , Bidirectional studies (AFC circa £140m) and freight asset management feasibility studies. There are a number of other multi discipline projects across the portfolio, such as station enhancement schemes.
  • Fulfil the role of DEM as per 02009 and TRU ECMP across the TRU development portfolio.
  • As the DEM/DPE the candidate would be leading and managing the other PEs and regularly interfacing with key stakeholders e.g., sponsors, NR route and DfT which would require strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Produce a TRU ECMP addendum describing the engineering arrangements to be employed across the development portfolio.
Here's what you'll need

You will preferably have a bachelor’s or master’s Degree (or equivalent Degree) with proven engineering management experience gained across a range of rail projects in a multi-disciplinary environment. It is desirable to be a member of a relevant professional institution with a sound understanding of engineering management principles and application in a rail environment. You will have the ability to:

  • Lead and guide others in implementation of Rail and relevant standards.
  • Undertake Designated Project Engineer (DPE) and or Departmental Engineering Management (DEM) role on rail projects.
  • Apply relevant rail assurance processes when working on rail design projects.
  • Understand the rail operational environment and constraints to find solutions to operational constraints.
  • Apply principles of rail System Engineering including requirements specification and management, designing for robustness (Whole System Lifecycle), Safety by Design and System Integration and Verification.
  • Proven ability to engage with, influence, and manage communications at an operational level with the project team and both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Understand the factors affecting motivation of project team members
  • Excellent organisation skills and an ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
