Microsoft Software Engineer II - Linux Kernel

Our team plays a key leadership role in Azure by driving Linux and open-source technologies, solutions, and strategy. In this role, you will work closely with internal and external partners, coordinate design and coding across multiple projects, and interact with teams in disparate geographic locations. You will work closely with upstream open-source projects, representing Microsoft as a community partner and contributor. You will be developing cutting edge accelerations and optimizations to power future public and private clouds. You will define and push the limits of innovative technologies -- working with the latest hardware, the largest servers, and even larger data centers.

Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of Linux kernel engineering experience, including proficiency in the C language
  • 2+ years of demonstrated triage, debugging, and fixing Linux kernel issues discovered in test and production environments

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check:

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with open-source communities. Upstream Linux kernel contributions are a huge plus.
  • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas:
    • Linux kernel debugging tools, such as crash or drgn
    • Modern tracing tools based on eBPF
    • Linux kernel security - reactive response and proactive development
    • Device drivers
  • Experience in Bash, Python, and/or Rust

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $83,600 - CAD $159,600 per year.

  • Triaging, debugging, and fixing Linux kernel bugs seen in production
