Your role
As a usability designer you will ensure that the products we develop in Philips are safe, effective, efficient, intuitive, and satisfactory to use. You will be responsible for raising awareness to usability & user-centered design, and advocate for user needs and patient safety in the business and the project team.
You will define the usability strategy for the project and lead the usability activities in collaboration with a global multidisciplinary team, which includes UI/UX designers, product designers, clinical specialists, product managers, researchers, developers, and system engineers.
Those activities include:
Conduct user research, task analysis and create use scenarios.
Analyze post-market data and identify usability issues.
Lead and conduct usability FMEA.
Support the development of user-centered and safe-to-use UI and UX solutions.
Plan, execute and report usability evaluations and ensure critical findings are fixed.
Conduct summative evaluation and create the usability engineering file, in compliance with the FDA guidance and IEC62366-1.
To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience:
Knowledge of user experience design tools, standards, sketching and prototyping skills. Knowledge of software programs like Microsoft Excel, Adobe creative suite, design research methodologies, design process. Visual and communication skills, usability principles, practices.
Education: Academic background in UX/product/interaction design or humanities or Cognitive science with focus on Human-Computer Interaction and Human factors (cognitive ergonomics).
You must have proven knowledge of:
Human factors and interaction design principles
Usability methodologies, processes and standards, especially for software products
Interaction design
Prototyping tools for creating mock-ups
The healthcare domain (or equivalent professional equipment domain)
Experience:
Minimum 6-8 years of Usability Engineering and UX principles of complex systems - medical devices preferred , from early phases of gathering user needs to late phases of product validation and post market follow-up. Including: conducting task analysis, providing inputs to UI/UX designers, risk managers and engineers, performing and reporting usability evaluations.
Preferred: experience in conducting usability (human factors) processes for medical devices, with a solid understanding of regulatory requirements for medical device usability, including FDA guidance and IEC62366-1. Experience in usability strategy, formative and summative evaluations.
Experienced in collaborating with designers and/or creating UI/UX & usability requirements and wireframes.
Academic background:
Bachelor or Master’s degree in human factors engineering or product/interaction design or other relevant academic background.
Proven skills:
Strong analytical skills. Able to recognize patterns and trends across domains, use scenarios and design solutions.
Ability to write high quality formal documentation for recording the usability activities.
Excellent English, written and verbal.
Highly independent and pro-active.
Good communication, presentation, and leadership skills.
Ability to “speak up” and be the voice of patients and users in every product-related discussion
Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary professionals, from around the globe.
Willing to travel to customer sites and Philips development sites abroad 2-3 times a year.
