As part of the Second Line of Defense function, you will provide independent oversight, through defining requirements, effective challenge and risk assessments. This role is responsible for leading the oversight of the Merchant and acquiring products, including their underwriting process, contract negotiation, acquiring partnership, and ensuring that the portfolio is properly managed and is operating according to strategic goals.
• To be successful, this role requires strong background in Merchant/Seller and acquiring risk principles, underwriting, risk actions, reserve/collateral management, chargebacks, network rules, analytical skills, and the ability to collaborate, negotiate and influence across multiple functions while maintaining independence.

Job Description:

You will make an impact by ensuring that:

  • Acquiring risk management objectives are met.
  • Senior management receives accurate and timely information to make informed decisions.
  • Establish guardrails in which the First Line of Defense must operate, including formulation of policy requirements, metrics and thresholds.
  • Challenge the First Line teams, whenever there are potential deviations to expected results, unsound risk management strategies, or when there is material risk.
  • Products and services are built and maintained to serve our customers.
  • Risk controls are aligned with business requirements.
  • Regulated entities are prepared for internal and external audits, inspections, and inquiries.

In your day-to-day role you will;

  • Lead the Merchant and Acquiring Risk Oversight function to provide independent oversight and effective challenge of products offered globally.
  • Advise senior management about contingent risk exposure and risk priorities including the emerging risks and the organization’s effectiveness in addressing the risk.
  • Participate in governance committees and forums to provide independent subject matter expertise in credit risk.
  • Validate that the initiatives, strategy, and policy changes are aligned with requirements and objectives.
  • Collaborate with regional and global stakeholders to address the regulatory inquiries, exams and reporting obligations.
  • Pro-actively review the Second Line of Defense framework, and constantly look for opportunities to improve it.

What do you need to bring:

  • 10+ years of experience in financial services andmerchant/seller/acquiringrisk management
  • Strong expertise and background in Merchant and Acquiring risk including underwriting, negotiations of risk actions, risk contractual languages, payments, etc.. Independent oversight experience in an international or complex financial institution is a differentiating factor.
  • Understanding payment ecosystem, chargebacks, bankruptcy laws and industries with long delayed delivery
  • Substantial experience in communicating at the executive level, self-confidence and the ability to challenge in an effective and respectful manner.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills; interpersonal and collaborative skills; and the ability to communicate credit risk concepts to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Critical thinker with strong influencing, negotiation, and relationship building skills; an ability to interface internally and externally to ensure successful, high-quality outcomes.
  • Ability to work with geographically disperse teams, especially with teams situated abroad and in different time zones.
  • Candidate must have solid experience in Data Analytics or Finance area. Ideally, expertise in financial underwriting, data intensive, payment services environments.
  • Experience leading a risk function which has produced and maintained risk policies, risk appetite statements and Risk metrics. This must include an understanding of building and operating a 2nd line Risk framework that delivers transparent, well-understood risk policies for stakeholders.
  • Ability to assess, review and analyze current merchant contingent risk strategy and exposure limits/thresholds to ensure alignment to the Risk Appetite. Ensure adherence to changes in the business model and/or regulatory environment.
  • A track record as an established leader who is equally strategic as they are tactical, and of the stature to build a peer relationship with stakeholders. This will enable them to build a fully functionalized model for robust and transparent Risk leadership.
