This involves being a confident advisor on quality and reliability engineering topics.

You are responsible for

• Ensure that appropriate project plan and quality plans are made that include all stages of the product’s lifecycle, targets and strategy for a robust software products development.

• Validates key design inputs including requirements, specifications, useability, reliability, performance, supportability, manufacturability, localizability, safety, security, privacy serviceability, sustainability, and costs.

• Provides effective oversight during the execution of the Quality Plan and any risk management activities, and of all design related activities during the lifecycle.

• Contribute during design and development to identify critical quality attributes (CTQ, CTS) and ensure that appropriate mitigations and design controls are applied to mitigate the risks.

• Facilitate design failure mode and effect analysis to identify failure modes early in the design and development process and apply design, manufacturing and inspections to mitigate the risks.

• Ensure with objective V&V evidences that design output meets the design input.

• Leading quality related problem solving with the cross functional teams

• Using post-market data for analytics and statistics to report on the product’s performance in the market (provide feedback to manufacturing, suppliers, or design teams) and initiate field actions when required.

• Act as a single point of contact (person assigned to) for project team(s); you’re responsible to ensure the product’s design quality relatedrequirements/criteriaare complete and meet the quality standards for every project milestone.

• Make substantial contribution to integrate reliability engineering activities with the medical device development activities.

• Effective oversight of project deliverables and provide quality input, including safety, efficacy, regulatory. Facilitate the product defect investigations and actions during defect management review meetings.

• Participate in audits and regulatory inspection as design quality SME and guide other cross-functional stakeholders on technical aspects and audit conduct.

To succeed in this role, you should have the following skills and experience

Specific skill requirements for this role include:

• Bachelor’s engineering degree with 12 years / Master’s degree with 10+ years of experience; in Software Engineering , quality engineering, SW Quality- or Reliability Engineering role in the medical or aerospace industry.

• Software testing experience will be an added advantage

• Ability to define detailed software quality and reliability plans for new medical product developments to ensure those are safe, effective and reliable.

• Ability to contribute to Risk Management and lead FMEA activities for new products and assurance that control measures are translated in appropriate (critical) requirements.

• Strong exposure to application of Design Controls; ability to do thorough Design Reviews during new product development to ensure robust designs that further improve patient safety and product quality.

• Ability to partner with V&V teams to assure thorough Verification, Validation and Useability testing.

• Analyze development and field data for Product Safety, Quality and Reliability performances and areas for further improvements of Product design and related development processes.

• Well conversant with statistical data analysis, regressionmodeling,reliability growth assessment and other quality techniques

• Experience with adequate and accurate review of DHF and DMR documents.

• Understanding of global medical device regulations, requirements, and standards, such as 21CFR820, ISO13485, EU MDR, IEC 62366, IEC 62304 and ISO 14971.

• Experience with working in multidisciplinary teams in a high-tech R&D environment.

• Effective interpersonal, written and oral communication skills expected.

Your role:

• Leading the Experience Designers in the Image Guided Therapy Systems (IGT-S) R&D Design team in Bangalore as the line manager, including KAR setting, Performance Management, and the first line escalation path;

• Acting as an inspiring thought leader in the area of competence by keeping abreast of design competence developments through literature and design benchmarking

• The allocation of direct reports in projects and handshakes with the involved PM’s;

• Working with the IGT-S R&D Design Director and the Central Experience Design organisation in Philips to align on operational excellence, training, career paths and capabilities building;

• Help to ensure the quality of the Design delivery in the projects staffed from the team;

• You will act as creative leader for the local R&D portfolio of the business, providing creative direction to the teams and co-creating the product roadmap with a customer-centric mindset.

In this role, you will have the opportunity tolead the Global Design team and drive strategic projects for Patient Monitoring and Defibrillators within the Emergency Care business. As a key member of the Global Emergency Care R&D Leadership Team, you will report directly to the Head of Global R&D, Emergency Care. This role entails:

• Global Team Leadership: Lead and mentor a team of approximately 15 design professionals across China, USA, UK, and India.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with R&D, Product Management, and Clinical teams to ensure best-in-class usability and innovation.

• New Product Introductions (NPIs) & Sustainability: Lead Design solutions for NPI development and lifecycle management, ensuring alignment with market needs and sustainability goals.
• Regulatory Compliance: Oversee FDA submissions and approvals for NPIs, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
• User-Centered Design & Risk Management: Lead User FMEA initiatives to optimize product safety and usability.

Key responsibilities

As a Design Director, you will:

• Responsible for leading and developing a global Design team across the globe for the Emergency Care business. Develop a strong local and global design team by fostering a culture of high performance, exceptional design quality, and professional growth by having direct and in-direct reports.
• Optimize design system value: Develop strategies to increase the design system’s impact on product teams by reducing complexity, eliminating unnecessary variants, and promoting consistent and scalable design practices.
• Build relationships across the organization: Collaborate with local product teams and stakeholders to drive adoption of the Philips Design System while aligning with the broader enterprise and program strategy.

• Partner with customers, product managers, developers, and other stakeholders to ensure design solutions align with business goals and customer needs.
• Ensure consistent, design quality execution of UI/UX across consumer and professional software products, leading by example with hands-on guidance and feedback to designers and front-end developers to elevate their craft.
• Advocate for the end-user experience, maintaining a firm customer-first mindset in all decisions.

You are a seasoned Design Leader with:

• Bachelor of Science or Engineering degree from an accredited school in engineering / technical discipline and ideally a postgraduate degree (Masters or Ph.D.) in Electrical /Electronics/Mechanical/Human Factors Engineering/ HCI/Cognitive science/ Product/Interaction or other relevant academic background
• 15+ years in product design and development with 5+ years’ experience in leading a multi-disciplinary team developing medical devices.
• Proven expertise in UI/UX design: Demonstrated success in designing consumer and professional software, improving design processes, and driving large-scale design initiatives.
• Design system knowledge: Experience creating and managing scalable design systems, including strategies for adoption and migration in complex business settings.
• Knowledge and understanding of regulation requirements for usability of medical devices: FDA guidance and IEC62366-1 and experience in the healthcare domain and experience in clinical workflows e.g. in hospitals, pre-hospital. Experience in FDA 510k and EUMDR submission is a plus
• Business acumen: A clear understanding of how design impacts business objectives, with a focus on driving measurable results.
• Stakeholder management: Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, especially in matrixed organizations, to engage with product managers, developers, and other stakeholders effectively.
