The material flow engineer plays an important role in the tech industry for Ford in Dearborn, United States. The engineer works within the company’s automated material handling system and works to optimize the flow of material and information between suppliers, production lines, and customers. It is their responsibility to ensure that the production line runs efficiently, as well as minimizing any obstacles that could slow down production or impact the quality of the product. The role requires a detailed knowledge of the production process and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve any issues that may arise. Additionally, the engineer must understand the needs of both the supplier and customer and ensure that delivery times are met. The engineer must also be comfortable working with automated material handling systems, such as automated storage and retrieval systems, robots, and conveyors. The material flow engineer must have strong analytical skills and be able to interpret and translate large data sets to identify patterns. It is also beneficial for the engineer to be able to program using software such as LabVIEW or MATLAB. On a daily basis, the engineer is responsible for tracking inventory, troubleshooting bottlenecks, and monitoring machine performance.
