Power engineers are responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of power systems, including transmission, distribution, and generation. Power engineers may also work with electrical contractors to ensure that the power system performs in accordance with standards set by the electrical industry. This role involves the use of numerous software programs that allow engineers to analyze and optimize power system design and performance. As a power engineer, you must be able to interpret data and solve technical problems, as well as identify, evaluate and recommend solutions. You must also be excellent in communication, teamwork and organizational skills. You should possess knowledge regarding electrical industry codes and regulations and be familiar with environmental, safety and health requirements. Power engineers must have a Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering. On-the-job training is also typically required for power engineer jobs in the field.
